Michael McClymond

Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School is pleased to welcome Michael McClymond, professor of Modern Christianity at Saint Louis University, Oct. 26-28, to deliver the school’s annual Reformation Heritage Lectures.

The theme for this year’s lecture series is, “Seeing Christ’s Cross Through a Reformation Lens.”

A graduate of Yale University and the University of Chicago, McClymond is the author or editor of eight books, including two award-winning books: The Theology of Jonathan Edwards co-written with Gerald McDermott, and The Devil’s Redemption: A New History and Interpretation of the Christian Debate Over Universal Salvation, 2 vols.

Additionally, he has edited the Encyclopedia of Religious Revivals in America, 2 vols. and co-edited with the late Lamin Sanneh of Yale University the Wiley-Blackwell Companion to World Christianity. McClymond has participated in field investigation of Pentecostalism in Mozambique and Brazil. In 2012, he was senior scholar-in-residence at the Overseas Ministries Study Center with Princeton Theological Seminary. His forthcoming book is tentatively titled, Martyrs, Monks, and Mystics: The Meaning and Message of Christian Spirituality.

The lecture series begins with a Reformation Worship Service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 in Hodges Chapel. McClymond will preach a sermon titled, “Always Carrying the Death of Jesus,” from 2 Cor 5:5-15.

Over the next few days, McClymond will deliver two lectures at 11 a.m. in Beeson Divinity School’s N-101:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 27: “Setting the Stage: Contemporary Challenges to Atonement Theologies”
  • Thursday, Oct. 28: “Reformation-Era Diversity: The Cross in Lutheran, Calvinist, Anabaptist, Rationalist, and Mystical Perspectives”

Beeson Divinity School sponsors the Reformation Heritage Lectures each year during Reformation Week in recognition of the profound impact of the Protestant Reformation on the global Christian church.

“Beeson is a reformational school, fully committed to the final authority of Scripture for life and doctrine and to Scripture’s own teaching that sinners are saved by grace alone through faith in the crucified and risen Lord Jesus,” said Douglas A. Sweeney, dean of Beeson Divinity School. “We are excited to learn about our Reformation heritage from Dr. Michael McClymond, and we invite others at Samford and in the Birmingham area to join us for his lectures.”

Reformation Heritage Lectures are open to the public, free of charge. No registration necessary.
